From Scratch: Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

After seeing homemade dishwasher detergent all over Pinterest, I decided to make some for my next From Scratch project. Using the recipe from Flitter Bugs, I combined:

  • 1 Cup Borax
  • 1 Cup Washing Soda
  • 1/2 Cup Kosher Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Fruit Fresh

The Borax and Washing Soda was leftover from my Homemade Laundry Detergent. I found both products in the laundry aisle at the grocery store. The Fruit Fresh was located with the canning products, next to the Jello, in my grocery store.

I use approximately one tablespoon in the dishwasher. At first, I was not impressed with this detergent. My dishes and the dishwasher had a light film on them. Two changes, corrected that. Several suggestions I read about homemade detergent said to use a rinse aid with this detergent. I had been using Jet-Dry in my dishwasher, so I assumed that would be enough, it wasn’t. Adding some vinegar to the dishwasher made a huge difference. The other change I made was I began using less detergent. Yes, more isn’t always better. I purchased a 2 T. coffee scoop to measure out the detergent. I wasn’t using a full scoop but I was probably using a little more than a tablespoon. Once I reduced the amount a little I began to really like this detergent. The detergent tray isn’t anywhere near full, but it works amazingly well.

Have you tried homemade dishwasher detergent? Did you like it?
