DIY: Repair the Vacuum

My mom recently discovered that her vacuum cleaner was missing a piece and had a broken hose. She took it to a repairman and he told her it would cost over $100 to fix it. The parts alone cost $42.22. She went ahead and purchased the parts and I replaced the needed parts. Before the days of the internet, this might have been a bit complicated. But, as I’ve mentioned before, YouTube may be the best thing to happen to DIY repair.

I found a couple of great instruction videos on YouTube. It also helped that I have a similar vacuum and could refer to it to see how things are supposed to be. In doing so, I discovered that I needed to replace the roller brush bar on my vacuum. I did a search on Amazon and found the part for around $13. The repairman charges almost $25 for the same part. Amazon has almost anything you could ever want. The vacuum part was sold by another seller but shipped by Amazon so I was able to get the part with free two-day shipping via Amazon Prime.

While I don’t recommend going all Cliff Huxtable, there are definitely repairs that are much easier to do than you might expect. Google the problem. Check YouTube for some videos of the same repair. Search for the parts online. You might be surprised to learn that you can inexpensively replace parts and make the repairs yourself with just a little bit of your time.
